Northwest Artist Releases
Agog / Coleclaugh / Jerman / Knott / Lerman / Shannon: an uncommon nature
(LP, Anomalous Records NOM 6)
"Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of Anomalous Records' existence, we
are releasing a compilation album based around recordings from the outdoors, and
featuring artists we release or are going to in the near future. Featured on this
LP are new recordings from all of the artists, made specifically for this project.
While unified by a common theme, the tracks are quite varied, including desert
contact mic recordings of rain and wind on a tree (Jeph Jerman), processed sounds
of a gate (Jonathan Coleclough), erhu (Chinese two-stringed fiddle) played on
a beach (Mike Shannon), mysterious singing 'water babies' (Agog), a mixture of
seals' calls and transducer recordings of ice (Richard Lerman), and the straight
recording of an approaching thunderstorm (Dave Knott). This attention to detail
in audio is matched by the close-up photographs of fungi, dripping sap, and trees
that surround it, photographed by Rachael Jackson in Olympic National Park. Compiled
by Eric Lanzillotta."

Black Cat Orchestra: Mysteries Explained (CD)
"The second Black Cat Orchestra CD features songs from Argentina, Turkey,
and Brazil, a Yiddish tango, and original works from three of our silent-film
scores. At once intimate and grand, we hope that it's just the sort of enjoyably
disorienting fare you've come to expect from us."
Available at Wall of Sound (Second Avenue at Bell, Seattle) or through online
distributor buyolympia.com at www.buyolympia.com/q/sid=720104654/Artist=Black+Cat+Orchestra
Stephen Gauci & Andrew Greenwald: Tales from the Lower East Side
(CD, Gauchtime Records)
"Former Seattle saxophonist Stephen Gauci (recently relocated to NYC) releases
his first recording on his new Gauchtime Records label. On Tales from the Lower
East Side, Gauci and drummer Andrew Greenwald play high-energy original compositions
and skirt the boundaries where jazz and free improvisation meet."

Ruhr Hunter/Chaos as Shelter: One (CD, Glass Throat Recordings CDgtr005)
"Featuring local Seattle dark ambient/soundscape composer Chet W. Scott (aka
Ruhr Hunter) and composer Vadim Gusis of Israel's Chaos as Shelter, One is the
first installment in a series of collaborative recordings. One presents a collection
of eight desolate movements, exploring ancient soundscapes and blackened atmospheres
of cold-blooded emotion. With a minimalist sound design and ritualistic composition,
tonal enviornments open doorways to a lull of trance-inducing instrumentaion.
One of the most intimate and unsettling audible experiences of 2001. Available
through Glass Throat Recordings at www.crionicmind.org/gtr
or Seattle's Wall of Sound (Second Avenue at Bell) in a limited pressing of 500
copies."
Meri von KleinSmid: CHI-TAPE (CD-R, American Archive Recordings)
From SoniCabal member Meri von KleinSmid, "CHI-TAPE is an experimental music
composition created in Chicago, Illinois in 1991. This is not a love letter to
Chicago, but a sprawling sonic megalopolis of religious testimonials, advertising
jingles, gospel music, public service announcements, fractured language, and popular
songs from the Chicagoland area, all corrupted by some of the thinnest, cheapest
cassette tape stock in the world."
Limited edition CD-R available at www.latibulum.com/mvk/mvk.htm.
Mike Marlin: Banjoology (CD, Spiney Palm SP-001)
"After a slight delay, Seattle banjoist Mike Marlin's debut CD solo release
Banjoology has hit the streets. The recording features 15 tracks of improvisations
(including an exotic Dub selection) on five-string and tenor banjos, miscellaneous
objects, and a few other strung-out instruments. Copies are available at Wall
of Sound or by contacting Mike at swordfish@ speakeasy.org."
John Massoni/Sonic Boom: The Sundowner Sessions (CD, Spaceage Recordings)
"The Sundowner Sessions is a collaboration between John Massoni (ex-Weather
Theatre and Maxine) and Sonic Boom (ex-Spacemen 3 and current EAR/Spectrum) completed
during an EAR tour stop in Seattle. Sonic and John met in London some years back
and remain close. Four longer ambient tracks of experimental music."
John Massoni (tapes, electronics, keyboards), Sonic Boom (mixing, electronics)
Available at www.spaceagerecordings.com
and local shops.
Jeph Jerman: The Second Attention (CD, Anomalous Records NOM 7)
"Using no computer, no editing, and even no amplification, Jeph Jerman has
turned to acoustically playing natural objects carefully chosen rocks,
shells, driftwood, branches, seed pods, and pine cones. From these simple and
often overlooked objects, he deftly coaxes minute and often unexpected sounds.
Far from a novelty exposition of odd noises, his music is played with skill and
purpose. His is a music to be played live, and so far only has been. We finally
have a recording that lives up to the quality of sitting quietly next to Jeph
Jerman and experiencing his sounds."
