Sunday, August 4th
Omake & Johnson
Seattle, Polestar Music Gallery, 1412 - 18th Avenue (at East Union),8 PM, $6 donation, All Ages
"Thomas M. Omake came to explore the world of sonic abstraction by being unexpectedly exposed at a young age to the indigenous musics of Southeast Asia. Traditional methods of studying this fantastic and unique music proved a disappointment for Omake and a bitter pill to swallow. After a severe (but undiagnosed) musical identity crisis, Omake pursued the enigma of the creative experience into the vacuum of abstract sound art and never looked back.
Vade Johnson, Jr. is an improvisor from the paleolithic school. His music is a fetid stew of rudimentary skerbibble giving way to highly skilled kerpop, all amidst a backdrop of unintended wheezing. Hailing from a long line of musicians from the Appalachian Mountains, Mr. Johnson brings a down home dull edge to characteristic avant techniques."

Cognitive Dissidents presents
inBOIL, Ffej (special ambient set)
Seattle, Coffee Messiah, 1554 E Olive Way, 8 pm, free, all ages.
"inBOIL is an exploration in the careful art of sound generated from silence, slowly nurtured into a saturated eclipse. This solo project of Carl Farrow uses advanced sampling techniques to transform familiar sounds into abstract music. inBOIL often begins with a simple palette of sounds (whispers, a bell, running water) then develops these into a complex, turbulent force. From soothing to seething, with sudden jolts and expansive floating timbres, inBOIL is an exploration of the physical nature of sound.
This will be a special ambient performance by Ffej. In any pop song or other piece of music with a constant rhythm, think of the beat as just a very low frequency in the range of pitches comprising the overall sound. Like a single note in a chord, this frequency interacts with the others and ads texture. It colors the mood and gives the music body. Now imagine music where both high and low frequencies are stretched to meet each other in a hazily defined middle ground. Using a two oscillator analog synthesizer, vintage rhythm box and delay, Ffej will design a series of soundscapes that blur the distinction between tempo and tone."

Seattle area, Channel 77 (SCAN-Seattle Community Access Network) , 9pm
This week's episode features:
Diamanda Galas performing The Litanies of Satan.
"A fiercely confrontational avant-garde performer noted for her wailing, four-octave vocal range, Diamanda Galas' unique, shattering vocal style, inspired by the Schrei ("shriek") opera of German expressionism (a form employing a system of four microphones and a series of echoes and delays) is something that must be seen, as well as heard."
Regen (Rain), 1929 - A film by Joris Ivens w/ soundtrack by the ICP Orchestra.
"Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens is among the most influential and prolific of documentary makers. He was influenced by German expressionist and Russian avant-garde films and founded one of the very first film societies to promote the constructive criticism of films, Filmliga (the Dutch Film League) in 1926. In the latter part of 1929, he made the avant-garde short Regen (Rain), a film in which he deftly spliced four months of footage chronicling different kinds of rain showers together to look like one day's shower. The film won considerable acclaim and helped turn documentaries towards impressionism. The legendary Dutch improvising ensemble The Instant Composers Pool, featuring Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink, performs the updated soundtrack. "

"Two sets from this trio of veteran Seattle improvisors. Coming from diverse backgrounds, Wally Shoup (alto sax), Greg Campbell (drums), and Bill Horist (guitar), seek and locate ledges and footholds of sonic communion -- pitfalls and pratfalls also welcome. What rises above any disparities in background and aesthetic is each member's enthusiasm and active involvement with improvisation. Cognitive Dissidents presents
The Furies (Margo Lauritzen & Friends), Vance Galloway
Seattle, Coffee Messiah, 1554 E Olive Way, 8 pm, free, all ages.
"The Furies are Margo Lauritzen on keyboards and vocals and Jen Gay on drums with their friend Laura on bass. Considering that this is their first show, it is hard to pinhole their sound. Suffice it to say that there will be a hint of goth, a healthy dose of indie-pop, and a crowded dessert-tray worth of dramatic spectacle. Weaving a path between acoustic sound and digital processing, improvisation and composition, technician and musician Vance Galloway uses the guitar as his entryway into the world of avant-garde electronica. His extensive use of custom-designed signal processing and surround sound in tandem with Power Book effects processors and prepared guitars creates a new context in which to experience traditional as well as drone-based ambient music."Nervewheel

The music always borders on the strange and discombobulating, yet there is something intensly pleasurable about it all. they have also been bringing in a theatrical element to their shows since playing on sonarchy last november. the surprises never cease in a kallisti performance due to the fact that they are intent on exploring the world of BOO! and all its glorious ramifications."

Seattle, COCA, 1420 11th Ave., 9pm, $5, www.cocaseattle.org
Openers Murderous Copulataion of Birds features local improvisers Gregory Reynolds(alto sax) and Cristin Miller.(voise) They perform weird liturgies of sex, death, breathing, and shrieking. Since moving here from California, Gregory has played with all sorts of wonderful people, including Bill Horist and many groups of his own design. He also recently joined William Hooker for a short string of duo concerts in the northwest.
The Elevator is Pierre Crutchfield utilizing turntables, woodwinds, and keyboards to produce deconstructed, soundtrackish structured improvisations in the vein of DJs Spooky and Olive. Formerly of Up Records weirdos Octant, Pierre has also been a frequent collaborator with many in Seattle's modern jazz scene, including Craig Flory, John Wicks, Eyvind Kang and many others.
Steve Gigante's recent bands include Tiny Bird Mouths and THETEETHE, he has toured in the past with Drag City's Brother JT, and he currently plays drums in Oly's Old Time Relijun. Past shows from Steve have ranged from beautiful, cracked solo acoustic guitar songs to one-man-band yelling/guitar beating/drum abusing improvisational art punk.
Michael White performs his third-ever solo violin concert. A figure in experimental jazz since the bay area scene of the 1960s, Michael White had tenures in the bands of Pharoah Sanders and John Handy, played with John Coltrane and Stevie Wonder, and taught Eyvind Kang. His solo concerts blend haunting melody with harrowing spirituality.
